For whatever reason, I feel compelled to mention the 4th of July. I won’t be celebrating it this year because that would just be in poor taste. In general, I think patriotism is one of the most over-rated virtues, regardless of which country you come from. This doesn’t mean that I’m not grateful to have been born an American and a citizen of a Western, “free” nation. I never take my rights for granted and even though I’m not one for flag waving and crying during the national anthem, I did take a moment to reflect on that today. So to all of you American readers, enjoy your day off and your BBQ and your fireworks!

July 5th, 2006 at 3:59 amHappy 4th. of July!!!! Although I am very patriotic, I think you can go to far with the flag (like the Flag Amendment that just failed). Still, many men and women have given all so you and I can have our freedom and rights. Many have served and sacrificed, some a little, some more than appears on the surface. I knew a older guy once who fought in WWII (all 4 years) and Korea ( 2 tours)who didn’t really get a scatch but he suffered terribly from his experience’s. His family were not drinkers but he became an alcoholic, so his family, and even those around him paid for those wars as well.
I think to myself, how do I honor these people, the hundreds of thousands that have given America the opportunity to become such a wonderful place, and my answer is always by the simplest of symbol’s, our flag (and our patriotism)!!! So I honor the flag and the 4th. to HONOR them!!!! -
I don’t wish to be picky, but your comment implies that WWII lasted for four years….it lasted for 6. I presume you meant all four years of US involvement. Unfortunately, the freedoms aour forebears fought for are being gradually eroded by certain leaders as our liberties are being destroyed. The legacy is being forgotten.
I don’t see the fascination in patriotism. Your nationality is an accident of birth. It is not something to fight wars over, in my opinion. I long for the days when nations are abolished and we learn to all live as one. Nationalism and religion have caused more wars than I care to mention.
