I watched the World Cup final last night. I find it astonishing that so many people are up in arms over Zidane and his red card incident. Perhaps it did cost France the game and I can understand fans being upset about that. But the actual incident? Who cares! I swear, listening to the BBC commentators, if I hadn’t seen the head-butt myself, I would have assumed that Zidane had pulled out a gun and shot the other guy dead. Such outrage over a non-issue. He’s forever shamed! His legacy is ruined! How ridiculous. It was a stupid thing to do, but we all do stupid things sometimes. Get over it.

Idd, the whole world seems to be in shock or something…
Like you say, we all make mistakes, no big deal
-
Not necessary shameful. He has made himself the story of the WC final.

I’m afraid I’ll have to disagree on that one!! I could not believe my eyes last night. A respected, experienced professional head-butting someone in the chest????? That kind of assault is virtually unheard of in football. Rugby on the other hand…….
-
i don’t understand what’s so shocking about it? that sort of thing happens in american sports all the time. i’ve seen a lot worse than that.
-
there is an old saying (don’t know who said it!):
‘Football is a game played by gentleman and watched by thugs. Rugby is a game played by thugs and watched by gentleman’
I think this probably why people are so shocked. Footballers don’t tend to indulge in violent behaviour as a rule. For rugby players it is a pre-requisite!!

I’ll take your word that football players aren’t violent, though I wonder what the Italian player said to Zidane to have him react like that. There are some nasty rumours floating around.
From what I saw of football players during the World Cup, they are a bunch of hysterical little brats. I’ve never seen such dramatics and whining. It was disgusting.
-
I didn’t see the incident, but football is generally more civilised (read: non-violent) than most American sports. Players don’t commit flagrant fouls like that very often. Though I think what makes it shocking is that it was Zidane - a consumate professional at the most critical moment of his career. He’s human - but I think people forget that he is too.
As far as all the ridiculous dramatics and playacting and hysterics - I agree, this tournament was rife with ‘em, and it left a bad taste in the mouth. The refs had said they were going to crack down on diving, but I saw NO evidence of that.
-
Also, I think rugby (what I’ve seen, anyway) is one of the most civilised sports going! The respect and deference shown to the referees is really astounding.
The rest, of course, is a melee’…

-
that is true they do treat the referees with more respect, but they do get up to some pretty violent antics. i always remember at uni, the rugby team had the most disgusting initiation ceremony that you could possibly think of. The footie team was, in comparison, very civilised.
