Anyone in London have a recommendation for a good mobile phone provider? I didn’t have a mobile in London last time, so the whole London mobile phone scene is new to me. I already have a phone, so I just want to find a good pay-as-you-go service provider. I have used Virgin Mobile here and it is horrible!!! That’s the last time I choose a mobile provider based solely on the chance to save 5€ on a SIM card. I imagine Virgin works better in London, but they are not my first choice. Any advice is greatly appreciated! I want to get a new phone number on Friday first thing — I will be living in temporary accommodations for a while (sigh) and need to at least have a phone number that won’t change when I move around. Ahhh, the life of a vagabond.

Also, in Paris we get free incoming mobile calls. Please don’t tell me this nifty set up is going to end in London…

  1. I used T-Mobile when I first got here (for a month or so) and it worked just fine.
The switch to a monthly contract took a week, but there was only a short period.

  2. I have had PAYG O2 since I got here in 2003, and have had no problems.

Incoming calls are still free :)

  3. Matt: I never thought of T-Mobile. Thanks for the tip!

Jen: PAYG O2? What on earth is that?! I will have to investigate. :)

  4. I like Virgin Mobile. Happy with their service while I lived abroad. :)

  5. PAYG=Pay-as-you-go
(i.e. no contract, just top up credit every so often. Good if like me you don’t use it much)
The lady love uses Vodaphone…I’ve had no problems with O2 PAYG

Shop around. You can often get a better deal if you haggle!

  6. Anne: You left a comment! I’m so excited!!! :)

Mr. X: I don’t see a consensus building! I wanted everyone to agree on one company. Sigh. Now I’ll have to go out this weekend and comparison shop. ;)

  7. 02 is much much better! If you get the simcard, you can get 500 free UK sms a month too (on PAYG). Cheap calls and you can get an bolt on add on which gives you calls to the US for like 5p a min :D

  8. Thanks Ananyah. O2 is looking good. 5p to the US? OMG!

  9. ooh 4got to mention, if u buy it online, it’s free for the PAYG simcard and you get the 500 free sms.

If you buy in the shops its like anything from 5-20 pounds and u dont get the free sms :D
