Rats

20 April, 2007 | Leave a Comment

Okay, I am now terrified to ever move out of student housing. This monstrous wicked boy I met this week said that London apartments are filled with rats. He said that every London resident has at least one rat as a roommate. He lives near White Chapel and he told me that when he wants to sit in his back garden, he has to fight off the rats with a stick.

Someone please tell me this isn’t true.

  1. I can’t speak for all of London, but perhaps he’s yanking your chain..(or busting your….umm..ovaries)

I’ve rented flats and houses in London over the past few years and have yet to see a rat. And didn’t you rent in London before?

  2. I had a cute little mouse in my flat in Edinburgh, and another in my next flat, but that’s about all i ever encountered (and that’s living in 150+ year old tenements in the center of town).

  3. Never seen a rat even in London! Nothing like in NYC - I think the foxes must eat ‘em ;)

  4. I`ve seen a couple of foxes in Central London, but no rats. You might see mice on the Tube tracks here and then, but Paris is the same.

  5. I think the only Rat you need worry about lives in White Chapel

  6. I haven’t seen any rats- I concur about the foxes and mice. I like seeing the foxes- but when they get into our rubbish I curse them.

In LA I lived near Griffith Park. One night I was walking home and I looked over on the steps of an apartment building where a bunch of cats would hang out on the steps and I saw a new cat. Then I realized that no kitty has a black body with a big white stripe. . . I crossed the street to the other side. Running into a skunk would be a really bad way to end the day. . .

  7. Thanks everyone! I really started to worry that, as Jen mentioned, London was filled with rats like NYC is. I can still hear that horrible squeaking sound that rats make at night and it’s awful!

I never knew there were foxes in London? I’m glad I know that now - I may have freaked out if I came across one.

I lived in a flat last year, but it was in a hall of residence, in a completely remodeled building. So I’ve never lived in a flat in the private sector and I started to worry about the horrors that await me when I move this summer. The guy who told me about the rats did so in the company of other Londoners and they didn’t seem to be surprised at what he was saying (and one even made a joke about KFC). But now I realize they must have been winding me up. Either that, or all these people live in rat-infested neighborhoods.

  8. I Lived in London for years and only ever saw 1 dead rat. They do say that your only ever a couple of yards from a rat in a city at any time. I dont know how true that is. On the subject of foxes, surely you’ve seen the cartoons with the ’snooty’ town fox and the country fox who comes to visit? Anyway, late night London is full of foxes who tend to sleep on warm rooftops during the day. They pobably keep the rats at bay…hopefully!

  9. We had a rat in our garden once. I think there was something wrong with it.

I’m not a big shrieker, but I did shriek.

My cat was messing with it and she’s only little - I was worried about Fancy’s safety.
