complacency

In London, when you’re in the train or Tube station, you constantly hear announcements about reporting unattended baggage because of security risks. Today I was in one of the big train stations and someone had left a black canvas bag behind in a rather high-profile area. I was buying a drink when I noticed it and I told the guy who was serving me that he should report it. I expected that he’d call someone right away. Instead he said:

“Yeah, I guess I should tell someone. Ummm, maybe you could do it.”

Meanwhile, no one else took any notice of this bag. So I went to find a security person and she did take it seriously. But it is a bit unsettling how complacent people are. I always look out for suspicious things when I’m in public places. Maybe I’m just paranoid.

  1. Not paranoid at all…just “aware”, which is important!

Let’s not forget that it was a tip from an electronics store clerk to the police that led to the investigation and subsequent arrest of the “Fort Dix Six’ recently.

I once saw an unattended bag at the ticket machine at the Heathrow Express, and when bringing it to the attention of the attendant there, she looked at me like I was speaking ‘cat’.

  2. Do you really think that we listen to those announcements??? We have had them for years (throught the troubles with the IRA), they have just become background noise. And as for reporting anything, you should know us well enough by now to know that we just like to mind our own business and not cause a fuss!! :-)

  3. We hear those same announcements on the metro here in Washington. But no one leaves suspicious bags around in Washington. We do other suspicious things in Washington.
