Across the pond, tonight is the season finale of 24, the Kiefer Sutherland “I like killing terrorists” pro-US propaganda tool broadcast by Fox (surprise, surprise). I have never watched this show, but my family loves it (surprise, surprise).
Anyway, the reason I know about the season finale tonight is that William, one of my dearest friends, just forwarded me part of an e-mail his partner had sent him from work earlier today. William’s partner alerted him that tonight is the season finale of 24 and that while he is watching this 2-hour extravaganza of bloodshed, he does not want to be disturbed by relationship drama, family crises or “even worse,” a meltdown from yours truly. Me, little ol’ me! He also included another friend of ours in this libelous attack.
Pshaw! William is outraged over this and so am I. We are not needy drama queens, thank you very much. We are writerly types in possession of very sensitive dispositions who need constant care and attention. But that’s all part of our charm. And for the record, I have not had a meltdown since leaving Paris. I am now a well-behaved gloomy Londoner who is too weakened by lack of sunshine to summon the fiery passion necessary for a meltdown. So there.

I love it! I can’t wait for D- to see this posting!!!
I can’t stand 24! I call it the “24 hour mindfuck”– Oops, am I allowed use that word here?
I say we stir up some drama tonight just to keep D- from watching the season finale!
-
“24 hour mindfuck.” That is too funny!
Good idea about creating drama tonight. Let me think of something really juicy.

May 21st, 2007 at 5:08 pmIt’ll brighten up soon (it already has where I live). We know it. No doubt that we will then moan about the lack of aircon!
-
Jaxter: I hope it brightens up! We had a semi-nice weekend.
Also, I was just kidding around in my response to your comment on the other posting about religious extremists! I wasn’t upset.

24 is still one of the best shows on TV, even if this season has successfully sucked. And to point out a blatant hypocrisy dearest Anglofille: 24 is the only show that bothers to look at religious extremism and how in most ways it isn’t truly RELIGIOUS extremism these terrorists serve, but just extremism and a thirst for power masquerading as religion in order to gain sympathy and/or followers. The show actually is very fair in its portrayal of everyone as the episodes move along and this season (and others) has had many Islamic characters loudly speak out against terrorists and that they are not “fighting for a religion and do not represent Islam”.
Well, well, it seems one of us has judged too harshly a show she has never even bothered to watch AND she has not even realized that in a lot of ways 24 does exactly what she was writing about in her previous posts: that people need to be aware that there is a difference between extremism and religion in most cases, and that there are going to be huge problems in some countries in the near future because those issues are ignored because of political correctness.
And 24 is not pro-US propaganda. If so, it is not done very well as every character on the show eventually screws up in such a huge capacity that hundreds of Americans die as a result. Or a plane crashes. Or a bomb explodes. Or Jack Bauer is not immediately recognized as the kick-ass messiah character he is and is jailed and questioned, for the 15th time, just in this season alone. The last season was also completely about the ineptitude and evil doings of the AMERICAN PRESIDENT! So, get your facts right. Pro-US? Certainly not.
Thank you, and I will now wait 9 hours for the 24 season finale to come on. Yipee!

Au contraire! Yes, I admit I have never watched this show. But I formed my opinion based on the fact that a lot of Republicans like it. Also, I read an article in the NYT or WAPO about how people at the Pentagon like this show and given it’s worldwide popularity, they see it as a valuable tool in winning converts to America’s war on terror. So the creators of the show may not be intentionally making propaganda, but I think it’s being used that way.
And if you aren’t nice to me, I’ll call you during the season finale (after I’m done harassing William’s partner) and then you’ll miss everything that happens!

May 21st, 2007 at 7:28 pmI think I’ll call William’s partner every 15 minutes just for the heck of it!

What, is this 1910? I don’t have an answering machine, a ringer switch, or am not allowed to NOT answer the phone every time it rings? Call all you want…I’m not picking up. Perhaps I should e-mail D and tell him of my genius plan.
Hmmmm, yes, the Pentagon uses 24 as Propaganda? Can’t be helped…just like extremists use religion as a cover for terrorism. See how I brought that back around? You see? God I’m smart.
-
Anita, wouldn’t it be sad…no, tragic…if the electricity went out at William’s house and SpliceGirl’s house during the season finale of 24? D- and my sister would miss their War on Terror propaganda. I HOPE nothing like that happens! But then people who are mean sometimes get bad karma…
-
Sometimes – people who are annoying and cause drama during some people’s only sliver of escape during a long day – ALSO get bad karma. Perhaps that is why there are so many “meltdowns” around here. Bad karma. What did you guys do?
-
I bet y’all will hear from D- very soon! LOL!
A power outage tonight? Hmmm… typically I’d wish for it just to show my mean side, but D- has worked hard this weekend moving mulch, so if two hours of 24 will bring him that much joy- then I’ll let him have it!
SpliceGirl- I think you and D- were made for each other!
-
oh good grief, now two of us are writing about this.

D- Says:
May 22nd, 2007 at 3:42 am24 is now over for the season and I want to thank you for not calling me during the show, having meltdowns, or worse creating any further drama in William’s life.
Thank you for a quiet 120 minutes and my hugs go to Splicegirl, my fellow 24 comrade.
D- (William’s partner)

(SIGH!)
Now that 24 is over, life may go on!
(BTW, why is everyone commenting on this blog and not my own?) GRRR!

I loved it the first season. 2nd season i was into it then missed a few and never got back into it. I think it’s a great show. That said, my favourite joke about it is there should be a drinking game where everyone drinks every time Jack breaks the Geneva Convention.
