London’s Hideous Logo

Today the logo of the 2012 London Olympics was unveiled and the reaction hasn’t been positive. There’s already a petition circulating to get rid of it. You can see why:

Very cutting edge — if your idea of cutting edge is a 1980s-esque graffiti logo. One member of parliament described it as “hideous.” Furthering the theme of hideousness, the Guardian’s sports blog says: “There’s some truly hideous sights in the world, but the newly revealed London 2012 logo tops them all. The London 2012 website says the new logo represents “the Olympic spirit and the ability of the Games to inspire people to take part”; others would say that it represents the multi-coloured vomit sprayed across the capital’s pavements at 3am on your average Sunday morning.”

The logo says 2012, but most people (including me) didn’t pick up on this at first. I thought it was pieces of broken glass. A famous brand marketing expert interviewed on the BBC this afternoon said he thought it looked like an SS symbol. Upon a little investigation, I discovered that he’s right. There are many other theories on what this truly is — some of them quite obscene. What’s even more obscene is that they spent £400,000 on it!

The BBC website asked people to send in their ideas for an alternative logo, virtually all of them better than the official one. I particularly like this one:

  1. I didn’t see the 2012 myself at first.

I don’t care for this logo either. It lacks the representation of London. Why not incorporate an outline of Big Ben or something (such as the Queen? LOL!) rather than these cryptic shapes thrown together.

Geez- they could’ve paid the two of us half the money to come up with something much nicer.

    (sigh!)

  2. Not only could we have done a better job for half the price, but we *probably* could have worked into the logo a likeness of Virginia Woolf. Geesh!

  3. Should I break out my LA Gear sneakers, Swatch watches, and day-glo tee-shirt ties with matching socks?

  4. I think they took the word “edgy” way too seriously. Ack! That is HORRIBLE! And BTW, anything with David Brent in it wins in my opinion!

  5. As someone elsewhere said, “It looks like a logo designed for young people by old people who don’t understand young people.”

  6. After all of these comments I wouldn’t dare say that I like it. If you look closely enough you will see Woolf’s shadow.

  7. Is this your way of saying you like it? ;)

  8. Update: The animated version of the logo is causing epileptic seizures.
