autumn two

Yesterday I wrote about the heartwarming sight of parents moving their children into the hall of residence where I live and work. Turns out that while I was writing that post — literally — the neighborhood thieves were hard at work too, smashing windows in the parents’ aforementioned Mercedes, Range Rovers et al. and swiping laptops.

What’s moving day without a few tears, shards of glass and a visit from the police? All I can say is, Welcome to the neighborhood, kiddies!

In happier news, this morning I was passing by a used bookshop and saw on their display table outside a sparkling Virago edition of Elizabeth von Arnim’s novel The Enchanted April for only £1.95. Score!

  1. This “smash and grab” activity seems pretty common in London.

A couple years ago I was in Eltham to visit the Palace there and walked past a car, in a residential area, which had been the apparent victim of a ’smash and grab’. It must have just happened because the broken glass was still on the road. In broad daylight. It seemed to be a nice area too.

  2. i really like your blog - linked to mine, i live in london as well but write in portuguese (my mother tongue).
had never heard of this author (hasnt been translated into my language and i guess this is how we used to get in touch with north hemisphere’s literature before the internet, by translations), going to write it down and maybe see if it is translatable (i ma doing my ma in literary translation).
    all best

  3. Daniela: Thanks for your comment! That sounds like such an interesting MA. Enchanted April was made into a film that is also very good. I haven’t read the book before, but I’m starting it. Let me know what happens with your project!

  4. Of course Anglofille will be sending Maman that wonderful copy of Enchanted April as a Christmas gift. Thanks so much fille fille. I am awaiting its arrival!
    Love, Mum
