Today alternated between bright sunshine and rainy dreariness with dark black clouds. Very eclectic weather.
This afternoon I bought myself a bouquet of pink tulips, which according to the label were grown in Lincolnshire. I used to buy myself flowers all the time, but then I became very practical and decided I couldn’t afford such luxuries. Since when did I become practical? I spend so much time sitting at my writing desk that I might as well make it pretty. And really, £3 is quite reasonable for a bunch of 6 tulips, given all the aesthetic pleasure they bring.
Speaking of being practical, my boss from my old teaching job has been pestering me about teaching for him in April and May. My university teaching job ends at the end of March, which is the end of term, so I will be free to take another job if I want. I hadn’t planned to teach in April and May and wanted to work on my PhD full-time. But then I started reading all these newspaper articles about executives who used to make $100,000 a year who are now working as janitors making $10 an hour. I’m not sure if this is media scare mongering or what, but I decided now is the not the time to turn down work. It’s only one or two afternoons a week, so it won’t be too bad. And it’ll get me out of this desk chair…
I am reading Doris Lessing’s The Golden Notebook now. This is my second attempt to read this book. I lost interest in it the first time I tried, but now I have to read it for the class I’m teaching. Given its status as a feminist classic, I’m embarrassed that I’ve never read it. I have to say, it’s a tough read. I’m struggling to get through it.

March 12th, 2009 at 5:22 amFrom my point of view, reasonably priced flowers are a luxury worth indulging in.
I also agree that this is not the time to be turning down job offers. You can use some of that money to buy flowers.

Cathy, that’s true. More money to buy flowers! These flowers have brightened my week so much, so I need to buy them more regularly.

Well done.

Wow, this must be my lucky week!

i struggled mightily with The Golden Notebook. about 100 pages from the end, i decided life was too short to spend reading a book i really actively disliked, and threw in the towel. one of only a few times i have ever given up on a book.

you could try skimming the last 100 pages…i skimmed many parts of this book and didn’t really miss anything. at least you could say you made it to the end!
