It’s so hot here! Each time I go outside, it’s like standing on the threshold of Hell. And inside ain’t no picnic either – my Nestle Crunch is just sitting here on the table and it melted. It melted! Everywhere you go, people keep saying “il fait chaud,” which thankfully is one of the French phrases I know. The way they’re all commenting on it, I’m hoping this is abnormal weather. Otherwise, I have a long summer of being cranky ahead of me.
Good news: Lorrie Moore has a new novel coming out in September! She’s one of my all-time faves. The synopsis online actually doesn’t look too compelling (gulp), but I’ll buy anything she writes. She also has a story in the New Yorker this week, which I haven’t read yet because I’m too hot.
In other writerly news, Haruki Murakami has published a new novel, inspired by Orwell, but it hasn’t been translated into English yet, sadly.
I’m off the fiction right now anyway. I can’t read it while I’m writing heavily, which is a bummer. I have a couple novels scattered around the apartment that I’ve started and abandoned. No can do. I miss reading fiction, since a good novel always makes life more pleasant. On the Metro, instead of reading, I just stare off blankly into space. Sniffle. Meanwhile, I only have two months left to finish my own novel. This current chapter I’m working on might drive me literally insane. I’ve been working on it since April, albeit with a large break in there. But still. My chapters are thematic, and this one is dark and twisted. Each time I open the document, it’s like stepping into a nightmare. Ooh – if I get my book published, that could be a quote for the back cover: “Opening this book is like stepping into a nightmare.” Why should I be the only one to suffer?
Finally, the photo below from Media Bistro made me laugh out loud – from a blog post titled “National Enquirer Got One Right”:

July 1st, 2009 at 2:27 amI know how hot it can be in Paris. Several years ago I was with a group of ladies and we all had what was called by the locals, “road-rash”. It went from the ankles almost to the knees and was red like fire. Thank goodness for helpful pharmacists or we all would have been in the urgency room.

I know the feeling! This week is a bit cooler over here than last. Last week’s weather is why Manitoba is the Slurpee capital of the world (ie more consumed per capita).
Icecubes in the bra and cold drinks/treats sometimes help – that and plenty of cold baths (though the latter tends to up the humidity).
Looking forward in a review on the state of French Ice Cream as well as a few Novel reviews.
PS. Do they have humidex (ie humidity index) readings in France?
