I don’t really care about sports that much, and I get annoyed with people who are whipped into a patriotic fervor over stuff like this, but I’ll make an exception today – because this is just too awesome:

The stadium was a sea of red-shirted home fans for what was being billed as one of the most-anticipated clashes in Canadian hockey history.

Banners proclaiming “Our home, our game” were displayed by partisan supporters who swamped the scattered pockets of USA fans.

…and then the Canadian team got their asses kicked.

Woot woot!  This has made my day, y’all.

  1. I don’t even get it… It’s just a hockey game– right? But as you know, I’ve never been one for sports.

  2. Of course it’s just a game, but the Canadian fans made it into something far more symoblic than that. So I’m glad they got crushed.

  3. Sorry, but the ‘most-anticipated clashes in Canadian hockey history’ is not U.S. versus Canada. I think the U.S. media made that up.

  4. That was from the BBC…

  5. The vast majority of Americans, of course, do not care about anything involving Canada. There is almost a full page of news from the baseball training camps in today’s paper. Olympic hockey? Nowhere near it.

  6. The US actually lost today in the finals. To Canada.

  7. Did you notice that for the Russian portion of the closing ceremonies – they had Vladislav Tretiak!

Tretiak looked an awful lot older today than he did here:

I know of know other country that admits that their men write in the snow on a show presumably being broadcast around the world. I said presumably …

I wonder if Stephen Colbert will get all offended that they are not writing his name in the snow.

    Sorry, going …
