Who is Anglofille?
I am a thirtysomething American living in London. I’m studying for my PhD in English. I moved here in September 2005 (though I lived in London once before, during the 1996/7 academic year). From September 2006 to April 2007 I lived in Paris, but now I’m back in London, which suits me much better!
My blog doesn’t have one specific theme, though I guess my writings about the expat life are the glue that holds it all together. I write a lot of inane stuff about my daily life. Here are a few tidbits about me:
I am writing a novel and I love books.
I have worked extensively as a writer. During my twenties I was a writer for women’s magazines (mostly teen magazines), then I worked as a writer for a major Ivy League university and after that, I contributed to a rather prominent feminist book. I am not embarrassed about my past writing for Seventeen and lame magazines like that. Though I now find them to be completely vile, I learned a lot about how the media exploits women. [Sylvia Plath wrote for Seventeen, you know.]
I am a passionate feminist, with a particular interest in body image (specifically the media’s objectification of women) and also the impact of religion on women’s lives. I am very touchy about religion.
When people ask me where I’m from, I have a hard time answering that question. I am originally from Southern California, where I spent the first 8 years of my life living on the desert. I spent the rest of my growing up years in a place I refer to on this blog as The Place That Cannot Be Named. [See the aforementioned point about touchiness and religion.] As an adult, I lived in New York City and in the Boston area before moving abroad. I’ve moved around a lot, as you can see.
In Paris, I discovered a passion for photography. Here’s a photo I took of myself in the bathroom mirror on my last birthday:
