In the Jardin du Luxembourg. I went there on Saturday for the first time in months. Since my classes at the Sorbonne ended, I’m not in that area as much anymore. I miss it so. Once spring arrives, I plan to spend as many of the afternoons I have left to me in Paris sitting in one of the chairs, reading a book or writing in a journal. Heaven.

![Last Night’s Sunset [Again]](http://www.anglofille.com/wp-content/image-headlines/3a0d4ad04e0a6341ddda80f85499c826.png)

I’ve seen many fabulous sunsets since being in Paris, but last night’s was truly spectacular. You know it’s special when locals with camera phones are trying to elbow the tourists out of the way. And I just happened to be in a prime spot on the Seine — lucky me! Watching this scene filled me with such intense feeling that I felt slightly woozy afterwards. I’m serious. To live in Paris is to be reminded that the world is a beautiful place, if only you take the time to look.

A few photos I took on the walk home from my visa appointment on Thursday…
In the Champ de Mars, next to the Eiffel Tower:
Does anyone know what these pink flowers are?

How to Move Out of a Paris Apartment

I couldn’t bear to watch this for more than a minute. That ladder was so flimsy, death seemed imminent.

Candy Apples
For sale on the rue de Buci. For some reason, I never expected to see candy apples for sale in Paris. Of course I bought one. And ate it. Now I need to find a dentist…

Happy Thanksgiving! Think of me when you eat your turkey and yams (ooh, I love yams with marshmallows!). I’ll be in class till 5:30 today, poor little old me, and when I come home there will be no turkey roasting in the oven, mostly because I don’t have an oven and no one I know does either. (But I do live in Paris, so don’t feel too bad for me.)

A restaurant near where I live in Paris, serving Louisiana/Cajun cuisine. They also operate an American grocery that sells Stove Top stuffing and peanut butter (which is not easy to find here and when you do find it, it’s very expensive).
**UPDATE** I feel very sad now, but it’ll pass…I hope…otherwise it’s going to be a loooooong day.

‘Tis Pity
Originally uploaded by Anglofille.
Advert in the Paris métro for the French production of John Ford’s incest extravaganza “‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore,” in French titled “Dommage, qu’elle soit une putain.” I don’t think “Dommage” is a good replacement for “‘Tis Pity.” I was pleased, however, that I recognized the use of the subjunctive verb tense. Hurrah!
Under the title it states: “Come, Annabella, no more my sister now, but my love.” Ewwwwwwww.

Four-in-One

From the Jardin des Tuileries, you can see the obelisk in the Place de la Concorde and the Arc de Triomphe up the Champs Elysées; through the Arc you can see La Grande Arche de la Défense. From other vantage points in the garden, you can see the Tour Eiffel. The first time I visited the Tuileries, I wasn’t aware of the delights that awaited me. It’s like hitting the touristic jackpot. And when the horizon is a lovely orange color, even better.

It’s the month of the photo here, an event that is held every two years in November to celebrate Paris as a major world centre of photography. All over the city there are exhibits, screenings, round-table discussions and more. Very exciting!
Last weekend while walking around my neighborhood, I was enchanted by two photo-related sights. First, a wall on rue Charlot that is plastered with pictures of people looking at the sky is very cool. The photos were taken over the past few months at a local school:
I also spotted this massive banner advertising a show in my neighborhood:
I hope to see the Doisneau exhibit at the Hotel de Ville. Every time I pass by, the queue is out the door!

I took this photo on Saturday night at the Canal St. Martin. Now you know what I do on Saturday nights — I hang out at the local canal with all the drunks and stoners. (Incidentally, I took this photo in the same spot where I took my other photo that I thought kinda looked like an Impressionist painting.)
In person, the canal was very dark — so dark that I could barely see what I was shooting. The lamps you see gave off very little light and the trees’ reflections in the water were nothing but dark shadows. I decided to take a photo just for fun and when I looked at the image in my camera, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was like a whole secret world had suddenly been revealed. With the naked eye, this landscape looked nothing like what you see in the photo. I have no idea how the flash on my little camera illuminated this scene in such a way. It was so very dark that it was almost impossible to get a photo that was not blurry. This photo is a bit blurry if you look at it closely (and at a larger size). But at least I got one semi-decent shot of this hidden Parisian scene. Like so many other places in this city, if you take the time to stop and look beyond what is immediately visible, you are rewarded with something special and secret, a gift to you from Paris.

Le Young Ones
Originally uploaded by Anglofille.
Last Saturday afternoon, I was quite amused to stumble upon this scene a few blocks from home. These guys didn’t appear to be homeless, they seemed to have just crashed after a rough night. They had a rather vicious-looking dog with them (not visible in the photo) but luckily it was asleep.
